Transfer orders: go and learn, Justice T Raja retired from service

Justice T Raja retired from service as an Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Despite repeated recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium to transfer him to the Rajasthan High Court, the Central government had not yet notified the transfer orders.

During his farewell ceremony, Justice Raja spoke about the nature of transfer orders for judges.

He emphasized that transfer orders are simply part of the conditions of their job and should not be questioned. He mentioned that transfers from one court to another, such as from Calcutta to Madras or to other places like Kashmir or Assam, are considered incidents of service. According to Justice Raja, once a transfer order is issued, it is obligatory for the judge to comply and move to the designated location.

In his speech, Justice Raja also shared an anecdote from his days as a lawyer. He recounted an incident where he and R Shunmugasundaram, the current Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, went to brief Senior Advocate Harish Salve for a case. Justice Raja mentioned that despite the senior lawyer's reputation as one of the highest tax-paying lawyers, he did not offer them even a cup of coffee or water. This experience, along with observing the behavior of senior lawyers towards their juniors and judges, taught Justice Raja valuable lessons.

Additionally, Justice Raja advised young lawyers to continue learning and improve their spoken English skills. He emphasized the importance of remaining grounded and reminded them to learn and remember case laws. According to Justice Raja, hard work, patience, persuasion, and humility are essential qualities for becoming legendary lawyers like Palkhiwala and HM Seervai. He also stressed the significance of being proficient in spoken English, as young lawyers may need to appear before High Courts in other states or the Supreme Court and interact with lawyers from different regions.

Justice Raja expressed his gratitude for the lessons he learned from senior lawyers and colleagues throughout his career. He highlighted the importance of imitating and learning from those who excel in their profession while also embodying kindness and humility.

Having served as a judge in the Madras High Court for 13 years and as the acting Chief Justice for eight months, Justice Raja retired from his role.
