7 lawyers jailed in Tis Hazari firing case, one on police remand

In connection with the firing incident in Delhi's Tis Hazari district court complex, seven lawyers were on Tuesday sent to judicial custody for 14 days and one lawyer Sandeep Sharma was sent to police remand for two days. After the arrest on Tuesday, the police produced two more advocates Shiv Ram Pandey and Jitesh Khari in the court, they and 5 lawyers present in police custody were sent to judicial custody. On June 7, the court sent the leaders of both the groups to police custody for three days.

Manish Sharma and Lalit Sharma, former vice-presidents of the Delhi Bar Association, were arrested by the police on the morning of 7 June. A day earlier, the court had sent three accused Aman Singh, Ravi Gupta and Sachin Sangwan to police custody for four days, who were part of the group of lawyers involved in the Tis Hazari court firing. On Monday, his custodial interrogation was extended for a day. On July 5, two groups of lawyers clashed and opened fire at Tis Hazari court.

Videos of the incident went viral on social media, showing a man in a white shirt and black pants firing in the air, as others hurled stones and wooden planks at him. The parties, mainly dressed as lawyers, could be seen waving lathis and engaging in a verbal tussle.

During a court hearing on Tuesday, the investigating officer sought Sharma's custodial interrogation for two days, saying it was necessary to trace the source of the gun and arrest others involved in the case. Metropolitan Magistrate Chatinder Singh said, “Two days police custody of accused Sandeep Sharma was granted.

All the guidelines of the apex court should be followed and the investigating agency should be directed that the accused should not be subjected to any kind of torture during police custody. The magistrate said, "The remaining accused Manish Sharma, Lalit Sharma, Aman Singh, Ravi Gupta, Sachin Sangwan, Jitesh Khari and Shiv Ram Pandey are sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

 

Other lawyers, including advocates Sanjay Sharma and Karan Sachdeva, also filed an application saying that since all the seven accused are practicing law, they can be kept in separate judicial custody. To this, the court said "The Jail Superintendent is directed to keep the accused persons as per the jail manual. According to the police, there was a fight between Lalit Sharma and Manish Sharma due to mutual enmity. The court directed both of them to continue their prescribed medicines." The application was also approved.
