Teacher accused of inciting students to harm classmate: NHRC notice on student harassment

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken "suo moto" notice of the incident in which a teacher in Uttar Pradesh allegedly incited her students to physically harm a fellow Muslim classmate.

The NHRC has directed the Chief Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh administration and the Director General of Police to furnish a report regarding the matter. This report should encompass the actions taken against the teacher and any reparations provided to the victim student's family.

Furthermore, the report is expected to outline preventive measures implemented or planned to prevent the recurrence of such disgraceful incidents, as stated by the NHRC.

A press release announcing this development has been posted on the NHRC's official website.

A video depicting the event had become widely circulated earlier this week. In the video, a teacher named Tripta Tyagi appears to have egged on students to slap a Muslim classmate. The parents of the child claimed that this mistreatment was meted out to him as a consequence of a mistake he made while working on multiplication tables during class.

The Commission has remarked that if the reports from the media hold true, the incident could be construed as a violation of the victim's human rights.

In the meantime, Tyagi has shared a video statement in which she asserts that although she may have erred, there is no communal aspect to the incident.

According to a report from NDTV, Tyagi stated,

"I made an error, but there was no religious bias involved. The students had neglected their assignments and my intent was to ensure their comprehension of the lessons. Since I was unable to stand, I requested a few students to lightly admonish him so that he would focus on studying."
