Today, the Supreme Court had a light-hearted "Gol Maal" moment when a lawyer mistakenly addressed Justice Hrishikesh Roy as "Justice Hrishikesh Mukherjee," confusing the judge with the famous filmmaker.
Instantly, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud corrected the lawyer, reminding him of the importance of knowing the judges' names.
While mentioning a case heard by the top court earlier, an advocate said, "This matter was before Justice Hrishikesh Mukherjee."
"Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Justice Hrishikesh Roy? If you make Roy into Mukherjee then... you must know your judges. This is the limit. Please go and check the website.", CJI said.
Justice Hrishikesh Roy was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in September 2019.
Earlier, he served as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and as a judge in the Gauhati High Court. Before his judicial career, he practiced as a senior lawyer.
The lawyer's mix-up, replacing "Roy" with "Mukherjee," is particularly amusing because he unintentionally referenced Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the iconic filmmaker whose timeless slice-of-life movies remain beloved across differentgenerations.
This incident added a humorous touch to the court proceedings.
Some of the popular movies directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who died in 2006 at the age of 83, include Anand, Gol Maal, Chupke Chupke, Guddi, Bawarchi and Abhimaan.
