Judgements This Week:
The State of Rajasthan has notified the Supreme Court that it is actively developing an anti-conversion law. This was detailed in an affidavit filed in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) aimed at curbing fraudulent and coerced religious conversions. The state acknowledged that it currently lacks specific legislation addressing religious conversions.
The Apex Court emphasized the critical importance of precision and professionalism in legal drafting at its highest level in a recent case. A lawyer was reproached for submitting a petition fraught with factual errors and inconsistencies, highlighting the court's stringent expectations in such matters.
"Before filing this petition in our court, did anyone bother to read it? As the arguing and drafting counsel, did you even review what you were submitting? Can just any piece of garbage be thrown into the Supreme Court?" questioned a vacation bench comprising Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice PB Varale, during arguments in a bail matter.
The Supreme Court has halted criminal proceedings against Lalit Goyal, Managing Director of IREO Group, and Vikas Oberoi, Chairman and Managing Director of Oberoi Realty Limited, who face allegations of cheating, criminal breach of trust, and forgery.
A vacation bench comprising Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and Augustine George Masih has issued a notice to the Haryana government in response to a plea challenging an order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Today, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) appealed to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud to reconsider and reverse the recent decision to assign service and labor matters to the Court's vacation benches starting June 25.
In a letter to the Supreme Court Secretary General and its Registry, SCAORA expressed that the decision has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of cases scheduled for hearing during the current summer vacation. This move, they argue, deviates from the established practice of listing only urgent matters before vacation benches.
New Delhi, June 17, 2024 — The Supreme Court of India has issued a warning to the stakeholders about a fake WhatsApp account impersonating the institution. This fraudulent account (+94785245387) has been circulating misleading information and making unauthorized requests, prompting the Supreme Court to take immediate action to protect citizens from potential scams.
In an official statement released, the Secretary General of the Supreme Court clarified that it does not operate any official WhatsApp account by that number (+94785245387) and urged the public to be cautious of any communications claiming to be from the court through this platform. The statement emphasized that all official communications from the Supreme Court are conducted through formal channels and its official website.
A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court requesting the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 examination. The petition also seeks a thorough investigation into the reported irregularities during the test conducted on May 5, under the supervision of the Supreme Court or another impartial investigative body like the CBI.
Filed by 20 students who participated in the medical entrance exam, the petition also requests that the National Testing Agency (NTA) and related parties be instructed to organize a fresh examination.
