Keeping in view the interests of more than four lakh students, the Supreme Court has ordered to extend the last date for granting affiliation to more than 750 private technical institutions of Uttar Pradesh for the academic session 2023-24 till September 15.
The apex court had in 2013 delivered a landmark judgment in the case of Parshvanath Charitable Trust and others versus All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The court had fixed the deadline for examinations, counseling and admissions for academic sessions in institutions imparting technical education to ensure uniformity across the country. The Uttar Pradesh Technical Institute Foundation (UPTIF) has moved the apex court, claiming that the applications received by the state government for seeking approval for the academic session 2023-24 cannot be decided by the apex court's deadline of May 15. taken.
The state government is bound to take a decision on whether or not to approve technical institutions by May 15 every year. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Prashant Kumar Mishra took note of the arguments of senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi and his assistant counsel Abhinav Gaur that the students, UPTIF and private technical colleges will have to suffer the loss of the academic session for no fault of theirs.
Singhvi, appearing on behalf of Uttar Pradesh Technical Institute Foundation (UPTIF), requested to extend the last date for granting affiliation till September 15. He also said that one month time should be given after September 15 for counseling in respect of technical institutions and courses approved by AICTE for the academic session 2023-24. The court accepted the request to extend the deadline considering the future of about four lakh students.
