Supreme Court of India Announces Summer Vacation Benches for May 20 - July 7 Session

The Supreme Court of India has announced the vacation Benches designated to handle cases during the forthcoming summer recess, scheduled from May 20 to July 7.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, exercising authority under Rule 6 of Order II of the Supreme Court Rules, has appointed twenty Benches tasked with adjudicating cases throughout the seven-week duration of the impending summer recess.

This year's summer break spans seven weeks, which is one week longer than last year's vacation period.

Notably, there will be three Division Benches on each day (except one week in June), unlike last year when there were only two.

The Benches notified to sit during the Supreme Court summer vacation this year are as follows:

May 20 to May 26

1. Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal

2. Justices PS Narasimha and Sanjay Karol

3. Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma

3. Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale

June 17 to June 23

1. Justices Vikram Nath and SVN Bhatti

2. Justice Rajesh Bindal and Prasanna B Varale

June 24 to June 30

1. Justices Abhay S Oka and Rajesh Bindal

July 1 to July 7

2. Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah

3. Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan

Throughout the vacation period, the Registry will operate from 10 AM to 5 PM for all its officers and staff, except for non-clerical Group-C members, whose working hours will be from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM on all days except Saturdays (excluding July 6), Sundays, and other holidays.

A recent statement from a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta highlighted that, despite common beliefs, summer breaks don't provide judges with significant relief from work. Instead, judges utilize this time to write judgments and attend to other judicial responsibilities.
