Chirag Bhanu Singh Registrar (J-I) of the Supreme Court issued an order dated 15.09.2022 stating therein that there are 13,147 (Thirteen thousand one hundred forty-seven) cases pending in the Supreme Court which have been filed prior to 19.08.2014 but have not been registered since they have not been refiled by the concerned AOR or Party-in-person. These matters are stated to be filed in vogue and they have been returned to the AOR and Party-in-person but the defects have not been removed. Virtually these matters are disposed of by the Apex Court by one order. This brings the pendency of the Supreme Court to a greater low.
The order says "The parties have failed to take any effective steps for years at
end to rectify and cure the defects so notified. The statutory period for curing the defects is well over. Seemingly the parties do not intend to prosecute the lis any further. Umpteen number of years were allowed to the parties to cure the defects, but to no avail."
"Needless to reiterate that the essence of curing the defects within 28 days and the power of the Registrar to lodge the same if defects remain unattended, literally remained unaltered under both the 1966 and 2013 Rules framed by this Court.
For all the reasons discussed hereinabove, I am constrained but to hold that there is no valid and a plausible reason to allow the aforesaid matters to be received for registration. I decline I to register the aforesaid diary numbers. As a sequel thereto all the aforesaid 13,147 matters (diary numbers) are ordered to be lodged under the provisions of Order VIII Rule 6(3) and 6(4) of the Supreme Court rules, 2013 read with Order X Rule 6(3) and 6(4) of the Supreme Court Rules, 1966."
