Supreme Court grants bail to Umar Ansari

In connection with a 2022 case involving a violation of the model code of conduct, the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to Umar Ansari, the son of the late gangster Mukhtar Ansari.

Subject to a bond of ₹20,000, the Bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra made the bail conditional for Umar Ansari, requiring him to cooperate with both the police and the trial proceedings.

The case stemmed from an incident where Ansari and his brother Abbas Ansari were accused of threatening the Mau district administration. At the time, Abbas Ansari was the candidate of the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party for the Mau Sadar seat. He has since been granted regular bail in relation to the same matter.

However, the Allahabad High Court had previously denied Umar Ansari anticipatory bail, prompting the appeal to the Supreme Court. The State of Uttar Pradesh's counsel opposed the plea, suggesting that the accused should initially seek regular bail from the lower courts.

Despite the opposition from the State of Uttar Pradesh's counsel, the bench proceeded to grant bail to Umar Ansari.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal with Advocates Nizam Pasha, Lzafeer Ahmad BF and Awstika Das appeared for Umar Ansari.

Additional Advocate General Garima Prashad appeared for the State of Uttar Pradesh.
