Supreme Court 2025: Three CJIs, Seven Farewells, and a Year of Change

In 2025, the Supreme Court will operate under the leadership of three Chief Justices, marking a year of significant transitions with seven retirements. 

The current Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to step down on May 13, 2025.

He will be succeeded by Justice B.R. Gavai, whose tenure as CJI will extend until November 23. Following Justice Gavai's retirement, Justice Surya Kant is poised to assume the role of Chief Justice.

The Supreme Court will bid farewell to the following judges in 2025 (in chronological order).

1. Justice CT Ravikumar

Justice V. Ramasubramanian is set to retire on January 5, 2025, completing a tenure of over three years. He was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Kerala High Court on August 31, 2021.

2. Justice Hrishikesh Roy

Justice Hrishikesh Roy will retire on January 31, after a term of over four years. Originally hailing from Gauhati High Court, Justice Roy was elevated from the Kerala High Court—where he was the Chief Justice—on September 23, 2019.

3. CJI Sanjiv Khanna

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna is set to retire on May 13, 2025. Elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019, he assumed the office of Chief Justice on November 11, 2024.

4. Justice Abhay Sreeniwas Oka

Justice Abhay S. Oka is scheduled to retire on May 24, 2025, after serving a tenure of over three years in the Supreme Court. Previously a judge of the Bombay High Court, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in 2019 and later elevated to the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021.

5. Justice Bela Trivedi

Justice Bela Trivedi will retire on June 9. She was elevated from the Gujarat High Court on August 31, 2021.

6. Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia

Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia is set to retire on August 9, 2025. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court on May 9, 2022, he served as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court and was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in January 2021.

7. Justice BR Gavai

Justice BR Gavai will retire on November 23. He was elevated from the Bombay High Court on May 24, 2019.
