A Sessions Court in Kolkata has convicted Sanjoy Roy, the main accused in the RG Kar rape-murder case. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Monday.
During the hearing, Roy maintained his innocence, denying any involvement in the crime. However, the court found him guilty of raping and murdering the trainee doctor.
The conviction was based on forensic evidence that confirmed Roy’s DNA was present at the crime scene and on the victim.
Sessions Judge Anirban Das stated that Sanjoy Roy faces a maximum sentence of the death penalty, while the minimum sentence would be life imprisonment.
The court was deliberating the fate of Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The incident, which took place in August 2024, sparked nationwide outrage, prompting the High Court to transfer the case to the CBI. The CBI subsequently filed its chargesheet before the session court. The matter even reached the Supreme Court, which took suo moto cognizance to establish guidelines for ensuring workplace safety for doctors and to oversee the investigation.
Following the horrific incident, protests erupted across Kolkata and the entire country, demanding justice for the victim. In response to a PIL, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI, which took over from the West Bengal CID. The CID had initially arrested Sanjoy Roy, the main accused in the rape-murder case.
Several cases were filed before the Calcutta High Court, which also directed the CBI to investigate allegations of malfeasance and corruption against former principal Sandip Ghosh.
Cases were also filed against the Officer-in-charge of the jurisdictional police station, who had initially registered the case as an "unnatural death," suggesting that the victim might have committed suicide, allegedly in collusion with the former principal. However, due to the CBI's inability to file a chargesheet promptly against the principal and the Officer-in-charge, both were granted bail.
Thus, the only remaining accused in the case, against whom the CBI had filed a chargesheet, is the principal accused, Sanjoy Roy.
