The Delhi High Court has given important comments and instructions on the matter related to increasing facilities for the patients coming to the hospitals of Central and Delhi Government in the National Capital. The court said that to prevent crowding in emergency wards, best medical care has to be provided to patients suffering from serious diseases.
The court said that there is an urgent need to increase the availability of doctors as well as adequate space and medical facilities in emergency wards to provide better treatment to seriously ill patients.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna said that there is a need for an emergency care system to provide quality health care in emergencies. In view of the above facts, the Central Government is directed to improve the infrastructure of its hospitals especially the emergency wards.
At the same time, Delhi Government is also directed to take steps to improve the overall medical system of its hospitals, especially from emergency wards. The court also directed the Central and Delhi governments to file an affidavit in this regard within 12 weeks and adjourned the hearing till March 13.
The court gave the above order while hearing the PIL filed by petitioner and former BJP MLA Nand Kishore Garg through advocate Shashank Dev Sudhi. During the hearing of the petition, the court had initiated the PIL by taking suo motu cognizance of the aspect that there is a need to update and enhance the basic infrastructure in the emergency wards of government hospitals. The court had found that for patients brought to the hospital in critical condition, the first few hours are the golden hours, which can make the difference between life and death.
Also, senior advocates Siddharth Aggarwal, Vishwajit Singh and Rudrali Patil were appointed as amicus curiae to assist the court in the case. Another petition in the same matter was also filed by petitioner Madhu Bala.
