SCBA Objects to 'Unilateral' Changes in Lady Justice Statue

Yesterday, the Executive Committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association passed a resolution, expressing its objection to the 'unilateral' alterations made to the Supreme Court's emblem and the statue of Lady Justice, without prior consultation with the Bar's members.

"We are equal stakeholders in the administration of justice but these changes when proposed, were never brought to our attention. We are totally clueless on the rationale behind these changes," the resolution read.

On September 1, the President of India unveiled the new emblem and flag of the Supreme Court in celebration of the court's 75th anniversary.

It was recently revealed that the statue of Lady Justice inside the Judges' library had undergone certain changes. Traditionally depicted with a blindfold to symbolize impartiality in the administration of justice, the new statue no longer features a blindfold and carries the Constitution of India in place of a sword.

The Association has also raised objections to the proposal of converting the former Judges' library into a museum. Previously, the Association had requested that the space be used to establish a library and a cafe-cum-lounge for the members of the Bar.

"We unanimously oppose the proposed museum in the High Security Zone and press our demand for a Library and a Cafe cum lounge for our members," said the resolution endorsed by all 21 members of the Executive Committee.
