SC Unveils New Statue of 'Lady of Justice' Without Blindfold, Signifying Shift from Traditional Notion of Blind Law

A new statue of the 'Lady of Justice,' representing the goddess of justice, has been unveiled in the Supreme Court. Notably, the statue's blindfold has been removed, symbolizing a shift from the traditional notion that "the law is blind."

Additionally, the figure now holds a book representing the Constitution instead of a sword. This statue has been placed in the library reserved for Supreme Court judges.

Media reports indicate that the installation of this new statue was directed by CJI DY Chandrachud. The purpose behind this decision is to convey that the law in the country is not blind and should not be viewed solely as a symbol of punishment.

The blindfold on the previous statue represented equality before the law, while the sword symbolized authority and the power to enforce justice.

However, the scales have been preserved in the statue's right hand, symbolizing balance in society. The scales represent the court's commitment to examining and considering the facts and arguments from both sides before arriving at a decision.

This statue is viewed as an effort to move away from the legacy of British rule. Recently, the Government of India replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) with a new version, signaling a shift towards a more independent legal framework.

Modifying the statue of the Lady of Justice can also be seen as a step in line with this broader initiative.

Prominent sources linked to the office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) have stated that the CJI advocates for India to progress beyond its British legacy. He emphasizes that the law is not blind; it treats everyone equally, meaning the court does not consider factors such as money, wealth, or other forms of societal dominance in its judgments.

According to the source, this was the reason why the CJI talked about changing the look of the Lady of Justice. He said that the statue should have the Constitution in one hand and not a sword, so that the country gets the message that justice is given as per the Constitution. The sword is a symbol of violence, but the courts give justice according to constitutional laws.

'Lady of Justice' is 'Justicia', the goddess of justice of Roman Mythology. 'Lady of Justice' is 'Justicia', the goddess of justice of Roman Mythology. The Roman Emperor Augustus considered justice as one of the prime virtues. After him, Emperor Tiberius built a temple of Justitia in Rome.

The Justicia became a symbol of the quality of justice with which every emperor wanted to associate his rule.

Emperor Vespasian struck coins with her image, where she was seated on a throne called 'Justitia Augusta'. Many emperors after him used the image of this goddess to declare themselves protectors of justice.
