In a significant development, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has revealed plans to introduce digital Supreme Court Reports (SCR) to complement the existing electronic Supreme Court Reports (e-SCR). This forward-looking initiative aims to bring the SCR up to date with the digital age and enhance accessibility to legal information.
The CJI acknowledged that the traditional SCR had lagged behind contemporary needs and stated that the forthcoming digital SCR would be more comprehensive. It will incorporate up-to-date footnotes and headnotes, making it an invaluable resource for legal professionals and enthusiasts alike.
As part of this transformation, the editorial team responsible for SCR has undergone a thorough overhaul, ensuring the quality and accuracy of the reports. CJI Chandrachud emphasized that this move is designed to particularly benefit law colleges that may lack the resources to subscribe to similar paid services.
"SCR had fallen way behind its time. Now it has neutral citations as well. Digital SCR will have volumes now, and the footnotes are also updated until about last month or so. I urge you all to take a look at it. The headnotes are also updated, and our entire SCR editorial team has also been revamped. This is all free and benefits law colleges who cannot afford such paid subscriptions," remarked the CJI.
The electronic Supreme Court Reports (e-SCR) project was inaugurated on the first working day of 2023 as a tribute to the nation. This service, which is also free of charge, has paved the way for the introduction of the more advanced digital SCR.
This progressive move underscores the Supreme Court's commitment to embracing technology and modernizing legal reporting for the benefit of legal education and the legal community.
