A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court's decision to confer senior designations on 70 lawyers.
The matter was brought before Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna for urgent listing; however, the CJI declined to permit oral mentioning.
"Please circulate a letter seeking listing. there is no oral mentioning," the CJI remarked.
On November 29, the Full Court of the Delhi High Court designated 70 lawyers as Senior Advocates after interviewing 302 candidates. However, the decision sparked controversy when a member of the Permanent Committee resigned, alleging that the final list was prepared without his consent.
The Permanent Committee comprises Chief Justice Manmohan, Justice Vibhu Bakhru, Justice Yashwant Varma, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, and Senior Advocates Mohit Mathur and Sudhir Nandrajog.
Sources indicate that Nandrajog, representing the Delhi government, did not sign the final list circulated to the Full Court for deliberation, as he was occupied with an arbitration for two days. Allegations have also emerged claiming that the circulated list differs from the one originally agreed upon, suggesting possible tampering.
