On Thursday, the Supreme Court agreed to consider a petition challenging a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order that limits the number of participants in a 'dhol-tasha' group during the immersion of Lord Ganesh idols to 30.
A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, acknowledged the arguments of a lawyer questioning how the number of participants could be limited.
"They said a 'dhol-tasha' group can have only 30 people. The urgency is that 'Ganapati visarjan' is coming up," the lawyer said.
"Send an email and the papers, we will take it up at 2 pm," the CJI said.
To mitigate noise pollution, the NGT has capped the number of participants in a musical group for Ganesh idol immersions at 30. The 'Ganesh Chaturthi' festival, which commenced on September 7, is celebrated over a span of 10-11 days. 'Dhol-tasha' groups, known for their vibrant performances, are a key element of traditional celebrations in certain regions of Maharashtra.
