Today, the Supreme Court issued a stay on the criminal proceedings involving former Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya, related to allegations of cheating and bigamy against his daughter.
A Bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Aravind Kumar requested responses from both the Uttar Pradesh government and the complainant regarding the matter.
The Bench was considering a plea from Swami Prasad Maurya, the leader of the Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party, challenging an April 12 ruling by the Allahabad High Court. The Lucknow Bench of the High Court had denied his request to quash the summons and criminal proceedings related to a marital dispute involving his daughter.
She and her father were charged with cheating and bigamy after a complainant alleged that they were married in 2019, but she remarried without first divorcing him. Despite divorcing her second husband in 2021, a Lucknow court has issued non-bailable warrants against her and Maurya, declaring them as absconders.
