The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the criminal proceedings against Tamil Nadu Opposition Leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami in a case involving allegations of misrepresentation of his wealth and educational qualifications in the election affidavit for the 2021 assembly elections.
A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued a stay on the first information report (FIR), registered in 2024, while seeking a response from the Tamil Nadu government.
"Issue Notice and further proceedings in First Information Report (FIR) 15 of 2024 shall remain stayed," the Bench directed.
The Court was hearing an appeal challenging a decision of the Madras High Court, which had rejected a criminal revision petition filed by Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
The High Court had upheld a 2023 directive from a judicial magistrate, instructing the police to investigate allegations of false information in Palaniswami's 2021 election affidavit regarding his wealth and education.
Additionally, the High Court had directed Palaniswami to cooperate with the police investigation to ensure the matter reached its logical conclusion.
Dissatisfied with the High Court's ruling, Palaniswami approached the Supreme Court with an appeal.
