SC Seeks Sealed Report on Properties Affected in Manipur Violence

The Supreme Court on Monday instructed the Manipur government to submit a sealed cover report detailing the dwelling units and properties that were fully or partially burnt or encroached upon during the ethnic violence in the state.

The court also directed the government to provide information on actions taken against the perpetrators and encroachers.

A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar scheduled the matter for a hearing in the week starting January 20.

In August last year, the court had constituted a committee of three former women high court judges to oversee the relief and rehabilitation of victims, along with the disbursement of compensation. It also appointed former Maharashtra police chief Dattatray Padsalgikar to supervise the investigation of related criminal cases.

More than 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence first broke out in the state on May 3, 2023 when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
