SC agrees to hear Pawar's petition challenging Maharashtra speaker on Oct 13

Today, Supreme Court  scheduled hearing on October 13 to review the petition filed by the Sharad Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) seeks action from Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar against rebel MLAs led by Ajit Pawar.

The Sharad Pawar faction has initiated a disqualification case against 40 MLAs who support Ajit Pawar. Additionally, they have submitted a petition seeking the disqualification of seven out of the nine MLAs involved in this matter. It's worth noting that in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, the NCP holds 53 seats, with some legislators like Nawab Malik and Suman Patil opting to remain neutral in this dispute.

Last month, the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar submitted a petition to Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, requesting the disqualification of 10 MLAs associated with the party's founder, Sharad Pawar. The 10 MLAs mentioned in the petition include Jayant Patil, Jitendra Awhad, Rajesh Tope, Rohit Pawar, Anil Deshmukh, Prajakt Tanpure, Balasaheb Patil, Sunil Bhusara, Sandeep Kshirsagar, and Suman Patil.

Ajit Pawar was previously asked about his thoughts on the possibility of the Maharashtra speaker disqualifying 16 Shiv Sena MLAs and the chances of removing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

"Such reports have been doing the rounds since the day Eknath Shinde became the chief minister (in June 2022). All these reports are meaningless,"

"However, it is the Elections Commission (EC) which makes a final decision. Both sides have gone to the ECI and everyone will put forth their stand on the given dates. As far as I am concerned, I will accept the final decision of the ECI," the deputy CM of Maharashtra added.
