SC Reserves Order on Kejriwal's Bail Plea in Excise Policy Scam

SC Reserves Order on Kejriwal's Bail Plea in Excise Policy Scam

The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its decision on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's separate petitions, in which he seeks bail and challenges his arrest by the CBI in connection with the alleged excise policy scam.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan heard arguments presented by Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, representing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who appeared on behalf of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"Thank you for the assistance. Judgment reserved," the bench stated after the conclusion of arguments by the lawyers.

Kejriwal has filed two separate petitions challenging both the denial of bail and his arrest by the CBI in the corruption case initiated by the central agency. The AAP chief was arrested by the CBI on June 26.

On August 5, the Delhi High Court upheld the legality of his arrest, stating that there was no malice in the CBI's actions. The court noted that the CBI had demonstrated how the AAP leader could influence witnesses, who were only willing to testify after his arrest.

The excise policy in question was scrapped in 2022 following a directive from the Delhi Lieutenant Governor for a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities and corruption in its formulation and execution. The CBI and the ED have alleged that irregularities occurred during the modification of the excise policy and that undue favors were granted to license holders.
