The Supreme Court has taken a significant step forward in the investigation of the murder of former Congress MP YS Vivekananda Reddy, who was killed in March 2019. In a recent development, the apex court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide the case diary pertaining to the high-profile case.
This decision comes after the Supreme Court's previous directive in July last year, where it instructed the CBI to submit the charge sheet and case diary records in a sealed cover. The court has also scheduled a hearing for April to address a plea filed by Suneetha Narreddy, the daughter of Vivekananda Reddy, challenging the bail granted to Avinash Reddy, her cousin.
Avinash Reddy, who is Vivekananda Reddy's nephew and a member of the YSR Congress Party, was granted anticipatory bail by the Telangana High Court in May last year. However, he remains under the scrutiny of the CBI in connection with Vivekananda Reddy’s murder.
Narreddy’s plea before the Supreme Court alleges that the High Court's decision to grant anticipatory bail to Avinash Reddy disregarded crucial evidence collected by the CBI. She asserts that Avinash Reddy, being an influential figure, poses a risk of tampering with evidence and witnesses.
The petition further accuses Avinash Reddy and other suspects of manipulating the crime scene in the presence of state police officials and falsely propagating the narrative that Vivekananda Reddy died of a heart attack. Narreddy contends that they pressured the police against registering an FIR.
In a separate development, YS Bhaskar Reddy, father of Avinash Reddy, was arrested by the CBI on April 16 last year in connection with the murder case.
During the recent court proceedings, Senior Advocate Sidharth Luthra, representing Suneetha Narreddy, emphasized the urgency of the matter. Additionally, ASG SV Raju, representing the CBI, pointed out an order from September 11, 2023, which directed the matter to be listed on a non-miscellaneous day.
The cases before the Supreme Court include Suneetha Narreddy’s plea challenging the anticipatory bail granted to Avinash Reddy, a plea seeking a court-monitored investigation, the grant of bail to accused T Gangi Reddy, and a plea by Gangi Reddy challenging the cancellation of his default bail.
The next hearing has been scheduled by a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna for April 22nd.
