SC Rejects PIL Demanding Definitions of Words in the Indian Constitution's Preamble

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought to define the terms used in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and PV Sanjay Kumar clarified that it is not the Court's role to define the words used in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.

"Define karna hamara kaam nahi hain. Aap khud kijiye. (It is not our job to define. You do it yourself.)," the Court said.

The petitioner, Shivam Mishra, argued that he did not understand terms such as 'fraternity' and would be adversely affected if the relief was not granted. However, the Court indicated that it found the petitioner's argument unclear and did not comprehend it.

"Aapke pleadings samaj nahi aate. (We don't understand your pleadings) You have said that if we don't give relief, you will be aggrieved," it said.
