The Supreme Court responded on Wednesday to the interim bail plea of Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Punjab MLA Jaswant Singh, concerning his request to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. While issuing notice, the Court declined to make a decision without hearing both sides involved.
A vacation bench, composed of Justices Sanjay Karol and Aravind Kumar, has served a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and scheduled the hearing for June 3.
Singh has contested the ruling of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which affirmed his arrest by the ED on allegations of his involvement as a director and guarantor of M/s TCL, a company accused of securing loan and credit facilities.
During the hearing today, Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhary, representing Singh, urged the bench to provide interim bail, citing the imminent elections in Punjab scheduled for June 1, and requested bail until June 4.
Last May, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids on properties associated with Singh, pertaining to an alleged bank fraud amounting to Rs 40 crore.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) also conducted raids on multiple premises associated with him as part of a money laundering investigation connected to the purported bank loan fraud.
