New Delhi, July 17, 2024 — In a recent administrative decision, the Supreme Court of India has announced that its registry will remain closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month. This decision comes as part of an ongoing effort to streamline court operations and improve the work-life balance for court staff.
The circular says that rest of the Saturdays would remain operational for the full day. Till now the registry work on every Saturday for half day.
The Supreme Court registry, which handles the filing of cases, issuance of notices, and various other administrative functions, will not be operational on these designated Saturdays. The decision was communicated through an official notification issued by the court's administration.
The move aims to provide the court staff with additional rest days to help reduce burnout and increase overall efficiency. The Supreme Court's registry is known for its rigorous workload, with employees often working extended hours to manage the high volume of cases and administrative tasks.
Reactions to this announcement have been mixed within the legal community. Some lawyers and court officials have welcomed the decision, citing the need for a more balanced work schedule for court staff. "This is a positive step towards ensuring that the court staff have sufficient time to rest and recharge, which is crucial for maintaining productivity and efficiency," said Nikhil Kumar Singh, a Supreme Court advocate.
However, some concerns have been raised about potential delays in the processing of cases. "While the decision is understandable, we need to ensure that it does not lead to undue delays in the filing and processing of cases. Measures should be put in place to mitigate any potential backlog," stated Achal Singh Bule another Supreme Court Advocate.
