SC Quashes Criminal Defamation Case Against Union Minister L Murugan Alleged Defamatory Remarks

Today, the Supreme Court qashed the criminal defamation case filed against Union Minister L. Murugan, which had been initiated by the Chennai-based Murasoli Trust. The case stemmed from alleged defamatory remarks made by Murugan during a press conference in December 2020.

The bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, while passing their order, took into account the arguments made by Murugan's counsel, who asserted that the politician had no intention to defame the Trust or harm its reputation.

As a result, the bench set aside the September 5, 2023 order of the Madras High Court, which had previously refused to quash the defamation proceedings against Murugan.
