In the aftermath of the tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Supreme Court, urging the implementation of stringent safety measures and guidelines to protect pilgrims attending the event.
The stampede, which occurred in the Sangam area on the morning of January 29, claimed at least 30 lives and left over 60 individuals injured. In response, advocate Vishal Tiwari has moved the apex court, seeking directives for all states to establish facilitation centres at Prayagraj.
These centres would provide essential safety information and guidelines to pilgrims traveling from different parts of the country.
The petition also calls for enhanced accessibility measures, including multilingual announcements and display boards indicating directions and roadways. This, the plea argues, would ensure that pilgrims from various States can navigate the event more safely and efficiently.
Furthermore, the PIL emphasizes the need for coordinated medical preparedness. It urges all State Governments, in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Government, to deploy small medical teams comprising doctors and nurses at the Maha Kumbh site to address any medical emergencies promptly and prevent staff shortages during crises.
"All States Governments with coordination of Uttar Pradesh Government shall also deploy its small Medical team at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh comprising of Doctors and Nurses so that at the time of medical emergency there may not be shortage of Medical staff," the petitioner has prayed.
