SC Petition Calls for SIT Probe into Sandeshkhali Rape Sting Video Authenticity

A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court, urging for a thorough investigation by a specialized team to confirm the authenticity and accuracy of a video depicting a sting operation linked to the Sandeshkhali incident involving rape and sexual assault against women.

The sting operation video captured an individual asserting that the rape charges against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh were fabricated. Moreover, the person claimed that the residents of Sandeshkhali had been instructed by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari to obstruct TMC leaders and portray them negatively.

Senior Advocate Meneka Guruswamy brought up the case before a bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court directed that the request for listing be reviewed, and suitable orders be issued accordingly.

Advocate Udayaditya Banerjee filed an application on behalf of a woman, stating that women in Sandeshkhali were coerced into signing blank papers, leading to false rape allegations against TMC leaders.

"In order to ascertain the on ground situation and in view of the sensitivity of the issue at hand, the applicant has prayed for constitution of a Special Investigation Team to conduct an independent investigation which shall be monitored by the Supreme Court," the plea said.

The plea emphasized that the Court should scrutinize the video in question, as it would uncover the extent to which constitutional authorities and investigating agencies were being influenced.
