Petition in Top Court alleges farmers' rights violation by Centre and four States

A recent petition filed in the Supreme Court has brought to light concerning allegations of rights violations against peacefully protesting farmers by both the Central government and several states.

The petition, submitted by Agnostos Theos, Managing Director of the Sikh Chamber of Commerce, highlights the challenges faced by farmers as they demand essential safeguards for their livelihoods.

At the heart of the matter are the demands put forth by farmer unions, which include securing a legal guarantee for minimum support prices (MSP) for their crops and the implementation of recommendations set forth by the Swaminathan committee.

However, instead of engaging in constructive dialogue, the petition alleges that authorities have responded with intimidation tactics and stringent measures, including fortifying the borders of the national capital and invoking prohibitory actions such as blocking social media accounts and rerouting traffic.

The petition raises concerns over the treatment of protestors, stating that some have been forcibly arrested and detained by various state governments.

Additionally, it accuses authorities of employing aggressive and violent tactics, including the use of tear gas, rubber bullets, and pellets against the farmers, resulting in serious injuries and, tragically, even deaths. The lack of adequate medical aid further exacerbates the plight of those affected.

Moreover, the petition underscores the impact of the fortified borders around Delhi, creating what it describes as a "hostile and violent situation" that obstructs the farmers' exercise of their democratic right to protest. It draws attention to the stark irony of peaceful farmers being equated to terrorists by their own government simply for exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights.

In response to these grave allegations, the petition seeks intervention from the Supreme Court to address the situation. It calls for the consideration of the reasonable demands of the protesting farmers, as well as fair and respectful treatment for them.

Furthermore, the petition urges authorities to ensure the free movement of protestors and requests a comprehensive report on alleged human rights violations by law enforcement agencies. Additionally, it calls for adequate compensation for victimized farmers and their families.
