SC Orders Himachal to Release 137 Cusecs of Water to Alleviate Delhi's Severe Shortage

SC Orders Himachal to Release 137 Cusecs of Water to Alleviate Delhi's Severe Shortage

On Thursday, the Supreme Court mandated that the hill state release an extra 137 cusecs of water to Delhi and instructed Haryana to ensure the smooth passage of this water from Himachal to the capital.

"The Haryana government should allow the flow of water, which is being received from Himachal, to reach Wazirabad in Delhi without any hindrance so that the people of Delhi get drinking water," the court said.

Haryana, however, argued that there is no mechanism to measure and separate the additional water received from Himachal.

A vacation bench of Justices Prashant K Mishra and KV Viswanathan noted that Himachal had agreed to supply the additional water and rejected Haryana's argument.

There should be no politics over water, the bench said.

"There is no dispute that Delhi is going through a severe crisis of drinking water in the heatwave. Haryana is also going through a heatwave but there is no data of water shortage," said the court.

The Supreme Court also instructed the Delhi government to ensure that water is not wasted during this period. It has requested a status report by Monday, when the matter will be reviewed again. Delhi has been grappling with a severe water crisis as an intense heatwave has swept the northwestern region over the past month. Temperatures across the city have soared to the 40-50 degrees Celsius range, and there has been a recorded death due to heatstroke in the capital.

Last month, the city government sought additional water supply from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh by reaching out to the Centre and the Supreme Court. "Delhi's need for water has increased in the scorching heat. It is everyone's responsibility to fulfill the needs of the country's capital," stated their petition.
