SC orders Centre to produce documents relating to Arun Goel's appointment as Election Commissioner

On Monday, a Supreme Court Constitution Bench said that it wants to see the files relating to the recent appointment of Arun Goel, a former bureaucrat, as Election Commissioner. The petitioner's counsel, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, stated that Arun Goel was granted a voluntary retirement from service on Thursday and that his appointment was notified on November 21.

"Mr.Arun Goel's most recent appointment was made by giving him voluntary retirement. Everyone who has been appointed as an Election Commissioner is a retiree. But he was a Government Secretary at the time. This Court heard the arguments on Thursday. He was given voluntary retirement on Friday. His appointment was scheduled for Saturday or Sunday. And he started working on Monday," "Bhushan stated.

According to Justice KM Joseph, who chairs the Constitution Bench, the employee must normally give three months' notice for VRS. Bhushan responded that he was unsure whether the notice had been issued. "That is why the Court should request the records," the attorney argued.

R. Venkataramani, India's Attorney General, objected to the issue of Goel's appointment being "juxtaposed" into this case, in which the Court is considering a larger issue. "I strongly oppose," AG said, adding that Bhushan's appointment had "no design."
