SC notices Chandrababu Naidu in AP skill development corporation scam case

The Supreme Court has requested a response from TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu regarding a plea filed by the Andhra Pradesh government challenging a high court order. This order had granted regular bail to Naidu in connection with the Skill Development Corporation scam case.

The panel, composed of justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma, issued a notice to N Chandrababu Naidu, seeking his response in this matter. While easing the conditions of his bail to permit engagement in public rallies and meetings until December 8, the court emphasized that certain restrictions, such as refraining from making public statements or speaking to the media about the case, will remain in effect.

The bench issued the notice returnable on December 8, maintaining, "The conditions imposed in the bail order shall be continued except participation in public rallies and meetings."

The Andhra Pradesh High Court had previously transformed Naidu's initial four-week interim medical bail into absolute bail, considering factors such as his age, health issues, and other relevant considerations. The court directed his release on regular bail and stipulated that interim bail conditions, including refraining from making public comments and participating in public events, would be in effect until November 28. However, starting from November 29, these conditions were scheduled to be relaxed.

The state government, seeking to overturn the High Court's decision, argued that Naidu holds significant influence and has allegedly facilitated the escape of two crucial associates, one of whom is a government servant, who have fled the country.

On November 20, the Andhra Pradesh High Court granted bail to Naidu, emphasizing the need to exercise discretion judiciously and in a humane manner. Naidu, who recently underwent cataract surgery at L V Prasad Hospital in Hyderabad, was arrested on September 9. He was subsequently granted interim medical bail on October 31, which has now been converted into regular bail.

Naidu is facing accusations of misappropriating funds from the Skill Development Corporation, allegedly causing a loss of over Rs 300 crore to the state exchequer. On October 17, the Supreme Court denied interim bail to Naidu, stating that it would announce its verdict on his plea challenging the high court's decision not to quash the FIR against him in the Skill Development Corporation scam case.
