SC Launches Crèche Facility to Support Young Lawyers and Court Staff

The Supreme Court has introduced an upgraded and larger crèche facility on its premises to support young lawyers and court staff with children. This expanded childcare center, nearly doubling in size, was inaugurated today by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.

During the open court session, CJI Chandrachud highlighted that the previous crèche spanned around 200 square meters and could accommodate 30 children. The newly expanded facility, now covering close to 400 square meters, has the capacity to accommodate nearly 100 children.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was present in the Court, remarked that the previous facility was often fully occupied with children.

"Oh yes, It is always packed. Our staff seek extensions to avail it," CJI Chandrachud replied.

He encouraged everyone to visit the new facility, noting that it includes dedicated sleeping and feeding areas as well.

"Please check it out; it’s located in the new additional building complex. It’s beautiful," said CJI Chandrachud. "As I have always said, childcare is a responsibility for both mothers and fathers."

Justice PS Narasimha added, "Even you all will feel at home there."

In a lighter moment, Solicitor General Mehta remarked, "When Lordships say my arguments are childish, I will have to agree."

In addition to the crèche, CJI Chandrachud announced that a new, high-tech branch of the Bank of Maharashtra will be inaugurated today on the Court premises. "This extends the prosperity of lawyers into financial services," he noted.

In response, SG Mehta humorously remarked, "But lockers there might not be a good idea."
