SC Issues Notice in Review Petition of Swami Shraddhanand, Currently Serving Life Sentence for Wife's Murder

The Supreme Court issued a notice regarding the review petition submitted by Swami Shraddhanand, who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Shakereh Khaleeli.

A bench comprising Justices Gavai, Mishra, and Vishwanathan has denied the parole plea submitted by 84-year-old 'godman' Swami Shraddhanand, also known as Murali Manohar Mishra. This marks the second rejection of a parole plea by Shraddhanand. The court has, however, issued a notice on his review petition challenging a 2008 decision that commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment, stipulating that he serve the remainder of his life in jail without parole, furlough, or remission.

The bench was told today that people change over time. "Am I still the same person at the time of commission of the offence?  I got 'best qaidi' award 5 times. Furlough and parole was given to Rajiv Gandhi assassins also, who were terrorists", court was further told.

In April of last year, the Supreme Court had denied parole to Swami Shraddhanand, while permitting him to withdraw a writ petition that had been filed a decade earlier. The court clarified that the dismissal of the writ petition would not affect any other legal remedies available to him. Additionally, Shraddhanand sought to halt the distribution of the web series *Dancing On The Grave* on Amazon Prime Video, arguing that it prejudiced his ongoing case before the Supreme Court.

Swami Shraddhanand, who in 1991 murdered his wife Shakereh Khaleeli by drugging and burying her alive in their backyard, was arrested in 1994 after her remains were discovered. Convicted of the murder by a Bengaluru trial court in 2000, his sentence was initially death, and this was upheld by the Karnataka High Court in 2005. However, in 2008, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction but commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment, ordering that he serve life in prison without the possibility of parole, furlough, or remission.
