In a significant development during the ongoing Article 370 case proceedings, the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has decided to solicit a response from the lead petitioner, Mohammad Akbar Lone, over allegations of him uttering pro-Pakistan slogans. The shocking revelation was brought forth by a counsel representing the "Roots in Kashmir" organization, a Kashmiri Pandits' group involved in the case challenging the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

The counsel asserted that Lone, a prominent National Conference leader and the primary petitioner in the case, had allegedly voiced support for Pakistan through slogans in the State Assembly and other venues. This revelation sparked immediate discussions in the courtroom.

Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, emphasized the importance of Lone affirming his allegiance to the Indian Constitution and expressing opposition to secessionist forces and terrorism. Another counsel went further, demanding an apology from Lone for his alleged pro-Pakistan statements. SG Tushar Mehta concurred, stating that Lone must not only express remorse but also openly denounce secessionist activities and terrorism perpetrated by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior Advocate V Giri, representing parties supporting the abrogation of Article 370, stressed the gravity of the situation, highlighting Lone's status as a Member of Parliament. Giri firmly stated that if Lone indeed made the controversial statements, he should only be allowed to present his submissions before the court if he formally apologizes and records his opposition to secessionist activities and terrorism.

Responding to the discussions, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud assured that the matter would be addressed during the rejoinder phase. He acknowledged the significance of the case and the responsibilities of the leaders involved.

The development has added a new dimension to the already intense Article 370 case, which has entered its 15th day of hearings. The allegations of pro-Pakistan slogans by a key petitioner have raised questions about the commitment of political leaders to the nation's unity and integrity, with potential implications for the ongoing efforts to bring normalcy to the region following the revocation of Article 370.
