On Monday, the Supreme Court established a committee led by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Nawab Singh to address and resolve the concerns of farmers protesting at the Shambhu border.
The committee members are :
1. Justice Nawab Singh, Former Judge of P&H High Court;
2. PS Sandhu, IPS Retired , Former DG of Haryana;
3. Devender Sharma, Professor of Eminence at GNCT Amritsar
4. Dr Sukhpal Singh, Agricultural Economist from Punjab Agriculture University
5. Special Invitee - Professor BR Kambhoj, Vice Chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh Agriculture University , Hisar
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan instructed the committee to hold its initial meeting within a week. The Supreme Court emphasized that the farmers' concerns should be addressed without politicization and examined by the committee in a systematic, phased approach.
The Supreme Court stated that farmers are free to relocate their peaceful protests to alternative locations. This directive came as the court was considering the Haryana government's appeal against a high court order that required the removal of barricades at the Shambhu border near Ambala, where farmers have been protesting since February 13.
In February, the Haryana government erected barricades on the Ambala-New Delhi national highway after the 'Samyukta Kisan Morcha' (Non-Political) and 'Kisan Mazdoor Morcha' declared plans for a farmers' march to Delhi. This action was in response to their demands, which included a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.
