SC dismisses plea against Lion Sculpture (Ashoka Stambh) atop New Parliament

A bench of MR Shah and Krishna Murari dismissed a Writ Petition filed before it by two advocates of the Supreme Court wherein a prayer was made to change the 'Lion Sculpture' atop the new Parliament Building. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition terming it to be 'Frivolous'.

The Writ Petitioners had argued that the design of the National Emblem atop the new Parliament building violated the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act of 2005.

The Bench told the petitioners who contended that the lions in the sculpture unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July appeared "ferocious and aggressive" with their "mouth open and canine visible" unlike the "calm and composed" ones in the original- emperor Ashoka's Sarnath Lion Capital that it is a matter of perception. "That impression depends on the mind of the person (seeing it) and added that there was no violence of the Act of 2005".

Finally, the bench passed the order "Having gone through the emblem regarding which the grievance is made, it cannot be said that it it contrary to the provisions of the Act."
