To maintain harmonay in the society, the Supreme Court requested the Centre on Friday to establish a committee tasked with examining instances of hate speech.
During the proceedings, the apex court was addressing a petition concerning purported "explicit hate speeches" that advocated for the violence and targeted elimination of members from a specific community, alongside advocating their social and economic isolation. These speeches were reported to have taken place during rallies in various states, notably in Haryana, where recent communal conflicts tragically resulted in the loss of six lives.
The division bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti asked Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, appearing for the Centre, to seek instructions and inform it about the committee by August 18.
"There has to be harmony and comity between the communities. All the communities are responsible. The problem of hate speech is not good and nobody can accept it," the bench observed.
