SC directs CBI Interrogation for Primary Education Board Chairman and Deputy Secretary amidst Teacher Recruitment Scam Allegations

The Supreme Court did not give any relief to Primary Education Board Chairman Gautam Pal and Deputy Secretary Partha Karmakar.

The bench headed by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay has directed the CBI to interrogate Gautam and Parth in the case related to allegations of scam in primary teacher recruitment.

The judge has also directed the CBI to take him into custody and interrogate him, if necessary.

Challenging that order, the Chairman of the Board had approached the Supreme Court. Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi did not grant any relief on the petition on Monday. The Supreme Court commented that why is there a fear of arrest if every kind of cooperation is given in the investigation? If necessary, security will be provided after the hearing next Friday.

In the year 2014, a company named 'S Basu Rai & Company' was given the task of reviewing the answer sheets (OMR sheets) of the Primary Teacher Recruitment Examination. On September 22, CBI called the head of that organization, Kaushik Maji, to the CBI office at Nizam Palace and interrogated him. After this, the report regarding TET examination was presented in the bench of Justice Gangopadhyay.

Firdous Shamim, the applicant's lawyer in that case, said that there are many mistakes in the 'digitized data' of the OMR sheet. The information on the OMR sheet is not reliable at all in the court, because the digitized data of the OMR sheet means the scanned copy of the OMR sheet. But in this case, the OMR sheet presented by the board before the court is typed information and many of the question-answer options in that information are also wrong.

After hearing this from the petitioner, Justice Gangopadhyay asked the investigating CBI that he wanted to know how this gap remained? The judge even said that the CBI did not even ask all the important questions which needed to be asked to the accused. Within 48 hours of the CBI reprimand, the CBI summoned Kaushik, the head of the agency responsible for checking the OMR sheets of the TET exam, to the Nizam Palace and interrogated him.

After this he ordered to summon the Chairman and Deputy Secretary of the Primary Education Board. Justice Gangopadhyay said that other officials, including the present Chairman of the Board, claimed the newly printed copy to be a 'digital copy'. Therefore, the court feels that there is a need to interrogate the board chairman and secretary. If necessary, CBI can even detain and interrogate any officer of the Board.

After this order of the High Court, Gautam Pal appealed to the Supreme Court to stop the CBI from taking any strict action.
