SC Denies Urgent Hearing for Arvind Kejriwal's Bail Extension Plea, Defers Decision to Chief Justice

The Supreme Court vacation bench on Tuesday declined an urgent hearing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea for a seven-day extension of his interim bail on medical grounds.

Instead, the bench suggested that the Chief Justice of India decide on the listing of the plea, noting that the judgment in the main matter had been reserved. Kejriwal, who faces charges in a money laundering case related to Delhi's former excise policy and is currently in Tihar Jail, is expected to surrender on June 2.

The vacation bench, consisting of Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan, directed queries to Kejriwal's counsel, Abhishek Singhvi, regarding the timing of the plea's urgency, especially considering a judge from the main bench had been available last week. Kejriwal had previously been granted interim bail for 21 days on May 10 to campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with restrictions on official duties.

The plea for extension cited Kejriwal's health concerns, including unexplained weight loss and high ketone levels, prompting a need for medical tests, including a PET-CT scan.

These health issues are seen as potentially indicating serious conditions such as kidney problems, cardiac ailments, or cancer. The case pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering related to Delhi's former excise policy.
