On January 11, a Supreme Court division bench led by Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M.M. Sundresh postponed the sentencing of Suraz India Trust Chairman Rajiv Daiya, who was found guilty of contempt of court for scandalising and wasting the Court's judicial time by filing repeated petitions with contemptuous allegations against judges and court staff.
On May 1, 2017, the Supreme Court imposed an Rs.25 lakh exemplary cost on the NGO Suraz India Trust for filing frivolous petitions and wasting judicial time, and barred the trust and its chairman, Rajiv Daiya, from filing any case, including PILs, in any court. Dhaniya informs it on Wednesday that the departmental proceedings by the state of Rajasthan have concluded and that he has been visited with the punishment of compulsory retirement. In light of this, he requested time from the Court to deposit the cost. He assured the Bench that the cost would be deposited once he received his retirement benefits. The Bench postponed the sentencing to give the defendant more time to make the deposit. As the hearing came to a close, Justice Kaul concluded - “We are trying to see if he improves his behaviour and conducts himself well.”
The case is scheduled to be heard again on April 11, 2023, at 2 p.m.
