SC Declines to Halt NEET UG 2024 Admissions Amid Alleged Exam Irregularities

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court declined to halt the ongoing counseling process for admissions to medical colleges, despite allegations of a paper leak and other irregularities in the 2024 National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) undergraduate (UG) examination.

A Vacation Bench consisting of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah has issued a notice regarding a petition that seeks the cancellation of the NEET undergraduate examination held in May and an investigation into the alleged paper leak. The Court has scheduled the matter for consideration on July 8 and requested a response from the National Testing Agency (NTA).

"We will not stop the counselling. If you argue further, we will dismiss this," the Court remarked.

The Court was addressing a series of petitions calling for the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 due to alleged paper leaks and other irregularities this year. Similar petitions are pending in various High Courts, including the Delhi and Calcutta High Courts. One of the petitions before the Supreme Court specifically mentioned allegations of the paper being leaked in Patna and incorrect question papers being distributed to candidates in Rajasthan.

Media reports indicate high number of candidates achieved perfect scores according to the results published on June 4. Candidates have also alleged irregularities in the awarding of compensatory marks for loss of time during the exam. On May 17, a three-judge bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra declined to stay the publication of the NEET-UG 2024 results but did issue a notice on the plea.
