SC criticizes lawyer for out-of-turn mentioning of case

The Supreme Court on Monday took a strong stance against a lawyer who attempted to expedite the listing of a case concerning judicial reforms out of turn. The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, along with Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, admonished the lawyer for his untimely action, warning of potential costs to be imposed.

The incident occurred when the lawyer sought to bring up a plea related to judiciary reforms during a court session. However, the Court swiftly intervened, questioning the lawyer's approach and reminding him of the protocol for such matters. CJI Chandrachud, in particular, expressed disapproval, likening the courtroom to a railway platform and emphasizing that it is not a place where one can simply jump onto any passing "train" of legal matters.

The Court's frustration was palpable as they probed the lawyer about the timing and appropriateness of his mentioning, especially considering it was well past the usual scheduling. Despite the lawyer's attempt to clarify his intentions and express his respect for the judiciary, the bench reiterated that the issue was not about his personal stance but rather his procedural misstep.

CJI Chandrachud's sharp retort questioning the lawyer's familiarity with Supreme Court practices highlighted the seriousness of the matter. The Court underscored the importance of adhering to established procedures, indicating that such impromptu actions could not only disrupt the court's proceedings but also incur financial penalties, payable to the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Furthermore, the Court urged the lawyer to seek guidance from a senior legal practitioner on the appropriate protocol for mentioning cases before the apex court. This recommendation reflects the Court's commitment to upholding decorum and efficiency in its operations while also guiding legal practitioners on the correct procedures to follow.
