SC Collegium Summons Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav Over Remarks Against Muslim Community

According to recent online news reports, the Supreme Court Collegium has scheduled a meeting next week with Allahabad High Court's Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav over his recent remarks concerning the Muslim community.

Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav stirred controversy on December 8 while addressing an event organized by the legal cell of the Hindu right-wing organization Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).

Speaking on the topic of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Justice Yadav made contentious statements, asserting that India would function according to the preferences of the majority population.

During his speech, he also used the term "kathmullah," a derogatory slur against Muslims, along with other controversial remarks, further fueling the debate surrounding his statements.

The Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR) has filed a formal complaint with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) demanding an in-house inquiry against Justice Yadav.

Notably, on December 12, the Allahabad High Court announced a significant change in Justice Yadav's roster. Starting December 16, he will exclusively hear first appeals—cases stemming from district court orders—and only those filed up to 2010.

Meanwhile, Members of Parliament (MPs), led by Kapil Sibal, have submitted an impeachment motion against Justice Yadav to the Rajya Sabha Secretary General.

The motion, signed by 55 MPs, is anticipated to be taken up during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
