The Supreme Court recommended on Friday that Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Mitali Thakuria of the Gauhati High Court be elevated to permanent judges of the Court.
According to a resolution published on the Supreme Court's website, the High Court Collegium recommended on April 1 this year that Justices Susmita Phukan Khaund and Mitali Thakuria be appointed as permanent judges. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed by the Chief Ministers and Governors of Assam, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
As per the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court judges familiar with the affairs of the Gauhati High Court were consulted to evaluate the suitability of Justices Susmita Phukan Khaund and Mitali Thakuria for permanent positions.
Furthermore, a two-judge committee reviewed the judgments of Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Mitali Thakuria, concluding that their rulings were well-reasoned, thoroughly analyzed the facts, and were supported by appropriate case laws.
After scrutinizing the material on record, along with the opinions of the consultee judges and the committee, the Collegium determined that Justices Susmita Phukan Khaund and Mitali Thakuria are fit and suitable for appointment as permanent judges.
