SC Collegium Recommends Permanent Status for Eleven Bombay High Court Additional Judges

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed the appointment of eleven additional judges from the Bombay High Court as permanent judges.

The eleven judges are:

  1. Justice Urmila Sachin Joshi-Phalke;

  2. Justice Bharat Pandurang Deshpande;

  3. Justice Kishore Chandrakant Sant;

  4. Justice Valmiki SA Menezes;

  5. Justice Kamal Rashmi Khat;

  6. Justice Sharmila Uttamrao Deshmukh;

  7. Justice Arun Ramnath Pedneker;

  8. Justice Sandeep Vishnupant Marne;

  9. Justice Gauri Vinod Godse;

  10. Justice Rajesh Shantaram Patil; and

  11. Justice Arif Saleh Doctor.

A resolution to that effect was passed by the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.

The resolution noted that the Bombay High Court Collegium had previously and unanimously endorsed these 11 judges for permanent appointments on December 14, 2023.

The Chief Ministers and Governors of Maharashtra and Goa have endorsed the aforementioned recommendation. Justice Joshi-Phalke and Deshpande were appointed as additional judges by the Central government on June 3, 2022.

The High Court presently has 40 permanent judges and 28 additional judges
