The Supreme Court building at Tilak Marg, New Delhi, is set for further expansion to create additional courtrooms.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, who holds independent charge, participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new structure.
Sitting judges Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Vikram Nath and BV Nagarathna and former apex court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul also graced the occasion.
Union Power and Housing Minister Manohar Lal also attended the event.
At the ceremony, the dignitaries used pickaxes at the construction site to mark the commencement of the new building. Significantly, the event opened with the recitation of verses from the scriptures of four major religions in India.
Later, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud was seen posing for photographs alongside the spouses of Supreme Court judges.
