SC agrees to hear petition filed against DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin over his controversial remarks on Sanatana Dharam

Today, the division bench compring Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi of Supreme Court agrees to hear petition against the anti-Sanatan Dharma statements of Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, A Raja and other party leaders. The Supreme Court has accepted another petition against all these people for hearing.

This petition has been filed by lawyer Vineet Jindal. The Supreme Court has added this petition with the already pending case on the same issue.

Last week, the court had issued notice on the petition of B Jagannath, a Chennai lawyer. The bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Bela M Trivedi issued notice while hearing this petition. There has been a lot of controversy since DMK leader Stalin's statement of abolishing Sanatan Dharma. Cases have also been registered against him at many places. Apart from this, BJP is continuously trying to corner DMK on this issue.

Tamil Nadu Additional Advocate General Amit Anand Tiwari raised concerns about the volume of public interest litigations (PIL) filed over Udhayanidhi's recent remarks -

"These are public interest litigation in the nature of 'publicity interest litigation'. There are 40 writ petitions filed across the country in different high courts. It makes it incredibly difficult for the State. Now everyone is coming up as a public interest litigant for publicity. Then, they will go to the media and circulate these. This is really unfortunate.

Further, AAG Tiwari questioned the need for another petition, when the court has agreed to hear a similar plea already.

"We are not issuing notice, but tagging this with the other one. We will examine the question of entertaining on the next day," Justice Bose said.

Case Brief -

State Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi attended a program in Tamil Nadu. Addressing the people here, he said, 'There are some things which are not enough to oppose. We have to eliminate them completely. He further said, 'Mosquitoes, dengue, malaria, corona are some things which we cannot just protest against, but we have to eradicate them forever. Sanatan is also like this.

However, when controversy broke out over his statement and parties like BJP started attacking him, he clarified his statement. Udhayanidhi said that I have not told the people that people following Sanatan Dharma should be massacred. The principle of Sanatan Dharma is going to divide people in the name of religion and caste. To uproot Sanatan Dharma is to establish humanity and equality.
