SBI Submits Electoral Bond Data to EC Following Supreme Court Order

In compliance with a strict directive from the Supreme Court, the State Bank of India submitted information regarding electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India on Tuesday evening. The Election Commission, having acknowledged receipt of the data, will compile and disclose it by 5 pm on Friday, as per the court's instructions.

However, the Chairman and Managing Director of the bank have not yet submitted the affidavit confirming adherence to the court order.

On Monday, the Supreme Court nixed a plea by the State Bank of India, to extend the deadline of March 6 for releasing the aforementioned data. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud criticized the bank for its "willful disobedience" of court orders and cautioned it about potential contempt proceedings.

"While we are not inclined to exercise contempt jurisdiction at this time, we place SBI on notice that this court may be inclined to proceed against it for willful disobedience if it does not comply with directions by timelines indicated in this order," the court had said.

The bank contended that it would require significant time to collect, verify, and disclose the data, which was stored in two separate compartments to uphold the confidentiality of all involved parties. "We require additional time to ensure compliance. We were instructed that this information was meant to be kept confidential," the bank stated, requesting an extension until June 30th.

In response, the Supreme Court highlighted that donor details were accessible at the SBI's Mumbai branch, emphasizing that the bank simply needed to "open covers, collate details, and provide information." "We did not instruct you to conduct a matching exercise. We simply requested a straightforward disclosure," admonished the Chief Justice to the SBI.

In a groundbreaking ruling last month, the Supreme Court declared the electoral bond scheme as "unconstitutional" and stated that it infringed upon citizens' right to information. The SBI had been instructed to disclose the data by March 6, and the poll panel was tasked with making this information public by March 13.
